Maple Grove NED Opener Postponed Due to Rain - Rescheduled for September 5/25/2003 Well you can’t blame NED Division Director Bob Lang and his crew. They tried their best. Bob even had two track dryers at Maple Grove to help with the cleanup but Mother Nature finally won out. The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Maple Grove Raceway was postponed due to persistent rains.
The remainder of the race will be completed on Saturday, September 20th. The make-up date is one week after the NHRA POWERade Keystone Nationals. Racers who remain in the field for the postponed race and who will be at the Keystone Nationals will be able to leave their cars, rigs and equipment at the track between races.
Tony Bartone, Manhasset, N.Y leads the Top Alcohol field with a 5.376 ET at 271.13 mph with Bob Newberry, from Schenectady, N.Y. grabbing the Funny Car pole with a 5.723 ET in his Valvoline Camaro.
Low qualifier in Competition Eliminator is Santo Volpe from Cocoa, Fla. in his gorgeous '34 Chevy A/SR. Santo ran a 0.722 under 7.968 to grab the top spot. The G/AA ’63 Corvette of West Virginia’s Eddie Smith was second at a 0.660 under 8.560. Volpe made it through the first round but the G/AA Vette of Eddie Smith had an engine malfunction during the burnout and was shut off. Super Stock was led by the Chevy S-10 of Skip Gladstone from Townsend, DE. Skip who also was low qualifier at the recent K&N Filters SuperNationals in Englishtown went a 1.282 under 10.368 in his V6 powered truck.
The only incident during Sunday’s eliminations was the beautiful Corvette roadster of Ryan Korek tagging the wall in the shutdown area. Ryan was OK but the beautiful roadster may need a little bodywork before the next race.
