View Full Version : Street ET Rules Change request

This was sent this afternoon to IHRA. I managed to get seven tracks in our division to agree to support having line locks in Street ET. Eight tracks responded. I guess the rest either don't care, don't get their voice mail, or don't get their email. I tried contact each track twice and have written emails of support from seven tracks. Hopefully this is enough to gain a rules change. Now we will wait and see how long it takes for IHRA to respond to this request.
I want to thank everyone who wrote or called IHRA to express their opinion on this matter. I will post here when I learn anything further.

Well, if u ask me, a car with a line lock, isnt a street car. To me, a street car is a stock grand am, or stock camaro, cavalier, whatever. These low 12 second cars in street w/ line licks should run MOD if u ask me.

Some of us do run Mod...
IHRA apparently view slicks and open headers as OK for Street ET as performed at the bracket finals.
Most tracks run street nights and there is nothing wrong with line locks for street night, only the Street ET points racers cannot have them.
If the regular Wednesday and Friday night street racers are the feeder system for the points racers, how many of them do you think will rip the line locks out of their cars to join the points series?
Why would a line lock make a car not a street car, but heads, cam, headers, are ok?
Check with Rick Nelsen about low 12 second street cars right off the showroom floor...
And, I drive my car on the street, to and from the track, over 10,000 miles a year. Tell me how that doesn't qualify as a street car...

Thats a good point, there r obviously true 12 second street cars, but u know where im comin from, there have been cars in street in the past that shouldnt have been. And that another good point, why can u guys have slicks, but not line locks??? I think they should allow line licks and eliminate slicks.....

Slicks and open headers at the bracket finals, not NED. NED limits us to DOT approved tires.
Personally, I think that Street ET should have its own section in the rule book. I think that DOT tires should be mandatory, line locks legal, and headers need to be muffled. But I learned long ago to fight only one battle at a time.
Last year it was getting "Super ET" changed to "Street ET"
This year it is line locks.
Next year maybe I'll try to get rid of the slicks.
There are a lot of 11 second street cars on Friday nights with turbos or NOS...

Yea, but bottles r for babies!!!! LOL I agree w/ the mufflers, line locks and street tires, as long as they r street legal. No matter what happens though, it seems that NED rules r completely different than IHRA rules, so i guess we r gonna have to live w/ it. What do u think about them changing the friday nites to mufflers and street tires now too??? I can see the mufflers, but, sumtimes its fun to go up on friday nite and stay the weekend....

Friday night, mufflers are ok: it is the way the world is going anyway, just see the controversy at Englishtown this season. 90db at 100 feet is the max down there and they are enforcing it...
Friday nights, slick cars should be able to run, and in my opinion, have the first part of each hour so they can have the track treated without being torn up by all the street cars. A lot of points racers drive up on Friday and it is a shame to not allow them to test. In my opinion the guys who put the most into their cars should be given some sort of priority over the street guys.
Anyway, although it is only 1/8 mile I bet a few of the slick tire guys journey to Oford for Friday night testing, Saturday big money race, and head to NED for Sunday points. That will probably be my general schedule.

the line lock ban just doesn't make any sense. I've had line locks on my street cars for years. Was a great way around a weak parking brake :D as well. I hope you can get clearer heads to prevail Ted.

Well boys, I am going to put in my 2 cents here, first, I feel my dad's 1967 Camaro is just as much as a street car as the next 2002 Camaro that comes off of the assembly line, the fact that it has a line-lock doesn't mean anything, I will say it is kind of fun having a line-lock in your street car, when you pull up to a stop sign around 1:00 am hit the line-lock and start doing a burnout on the street, to see how long you can spin the tires for is awesome. It is allot of fun having these racecar parts in your street car, I really think that NED shouldn't worry about it because there is NO advantage over having a line-lock and not having one, if I was still in the street class, you bet that my car would have one in it until I was told to remove it, because it is definately a pain to take it back out and bleed the brakes again.
I just thought I would add my 2 cent in.

Hey guys if the IHRA dosent address this issue there is still hope, Kevin Brodeur has also been working on it and Joe agreed that as long as we get a MAJORITY of street points racers to agree to it then we WILL be allowed to use the lines locks this year with the understanding that when we go to Ohio they wont be allowed. It may only be a temp cure but as far as i can tell its better than nothing :) as far as those low 12 sec cars in street im all for it my car has run 11's but i jsut dial it back so it will only run 12.0 on a good day it is a true street car that has been drivin to florida and back with no trouble at all, Ted is the only other person i know who drives his car more than i do keep it up gas is cheap lol........SEEYAA

Hey Rick,
Ur right, like i said b4 there r def fast street cars out there. And line locks r no advantage or disadvantage at all, i dont see the guff, but, MOST street cars dont have em, thats probly why they arent allowed, but as far as the racin goes, u guys should be able to have em

I spoke with Mike Baker this morning at IHRA. He provided me the proper format to make the formal request for a rule change.
Joe Lombardo has graciously offered his assistance with formatting the responses from the other Division III tracks and preparing a cover letter to accompany the formal request.
I have provided Joe all the information and responses I have been able to gather from the other tracks in our division.
Althloough not a "done deal" it certainly looks promising at this point.
I contacted every track twice. I received a total of eight responses, and seven were strongly in favor of a rule change. The one other track that responded did not say whether or not they would support a change, only sying that the reason line locks were not allowed in Street ET was because they were not OEM equipment. I did respond to them reminding them that slicks and headers were also not OEM equipment on most vehicles but that these were legal from the perspective of IHRA proper...
So we wait for a response from IHRA.
