OK everybody - I'm tired of wiping oil off of my engine! What do you recommend for gaskets that won't leak? I see Moroso has a cork and steel one for about $30 and Fel-pro has one for $44 or so. I can't help getting cheap stuff - I'm half Scottish! Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Mark,
I've used the extra thick Mr Gasket ones for many years with very little trouble. I can do frequent valve adjustments without worrying about the covers leaking.
Hope this helps,
Doug

Mark--

We use a great gasket made by Fel-Pro. It's steel sandwiched in rubber.

They are called Neoprene Valve Cover Gaskets by Fel-Pro

$31.99 at Autozone

By the way Mark, what kind of valve covers do you have (aluminum, polymer, etc), and how are you holding them on (bolts, studs, nylocks, etc)? What kind of gasket goop (if any) are you using?

That all can make a difference on whether they want to leak or not...

Later!

I use the same gaskets dave does, the beauty is you can take your valve covers off and on without worry about the gaskets, its well worth the extra cost.
Same thing with the oil pan gasket............. :)

:) In my experience Ive always used the extra thick MR. GASKET ones, they last for years even with checking valves weekly. I also dont glue them to either the valve cover or the head :)

Hi Mark Mr Gasket makes nice spreader bars for thin type covers, this spreads the load out and any gasket will hold, just thought i'd put my 2 cents in there....... Snow?? ummm it's almost gone??? Racing in April??? The "Shadow" Knows !!!!!!! Hope to see you all soon!!!!!! TK

DOUBLE OUCH!!
Dave - that was a low blow!
Actually Mike Sawyer has the right idea - I have the Moroso thin stamped steel covers. Am going to buy (brand new!) thick aluminum covers. Jeez - even Lee has them!
You guys trying to stir me up or what? Fellow Chevy guys too. Makes me want to find a MOPAR!

I agree with you Bill! I had a 426 & a 440 in my '65 and never once had a valve cover leak........ Most of the oil never had a chance to make that high. :D

Really MB, NEVER leaked in all 5 races you made last year?

Maybe it's because the oil never makes it to the top side of the motor.......

My only queation is what do you use more of.... Oil or Meow Mix Kitty litter? I'm guessing the useage is 50/50 :p

MB, Not much chance for leakage when your strapped to the old AAA ramp truck Eh?

A true MOPar man would have known what to do. Mount a Model A Ford gas tank in the cowl area, and presto, a gravity fed oiling system for the valve train. :D

That's why MOPars are equipped with rear mounted tow hooks, to haul those leakin CHEVrolets, AND, tow trucks out of the way, so real drag cars can race! :p

I know the thread has gone far from the original point - but I've been using the same Moroso rubber coated metal frame gaskets since 1990. They still don't leak!
