Way to help car count and increase profit at Oxford
1. Communication. You need to keep in touch with everybody. And with it being 2004 there are multiple ways to do that. Website, phone with current message, Flyers, Newspaper adds etc. I think this was the biggest weakness they had this season. I can remember racers standing in the pits talking about next weeks race and not knowing what classes or who would be able to race and these guys are regulars!!! How much does the guy who isn’t a regular going to be aware of.
2. Rules. Is there any currently at Oxford that are written down???? It’s a shame that people are spending their money not knowing what the rules are. Also I herd some complaining that they felt others were taking advantage of no rules and running equipment that they felt shouldn’t be allowed in that class. Write it down and get the info out to the racers BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS.
3. Point’s series should include any racer who pays to get in. It may take a little time to track but it encourages people to return. Not a bad thing for the track.
4. Rain Dates. Let’s face it we live in an unpredictable state as far as weather is concerned. If street night is rained out then run it with the Friday race. Also if Friday is rained out then run it Saturday morning. Also if you posted it on the web or had a call in line when the weather was bad you could avoid people towing up for nothing.
5. Change the race times. I think most people have a hard time getting to the track by 6pm starting time. Many people work until 5pm and getting home and hooking up the trailer and getting to Oxford before the race is impossible so they don’t even try. I don’t know if the old management had to get to bed early but most people don’t mind staying up during the week if it means racing. Start the night races at around 7:30.
6. Qualifying. Again another lame thing the management was doing. Just two time trials and let’s take a break. Who gives a crap it somebody wants to burn their car down with 10 time trials. But what the heck if it’s fun then let them do it. Start time trials at 6 pm and run them until 8:30 and let anybody who wants to run do so as many times as they want. A racer could have a mini test and tune before the race. I mean you got the track open so put as many cars down the track as possible. That alone will bring in big car counts
7. Run different type of events. The same old thing gets boring. I could write an hour on this but it should be obvious. One thing that is a big problem with drag racing is that half the field looses first round. Not a good thing for making people happy! Have the cars eliminated go into a last chance ladder so they can keep racing. This would make it much more fun for new guys who get put up against Childs in the first round.
8. DO NOT CHARGE ADMISSION FOR WOMEN. Let’s face it. Drag racing is not a big women’s sport. Encourage women to show and men will follow. Hey sounds like a good time for the young guys to bring your girlfriend and her friends and show of your car and they get in for free.
9. Challenge other tracks to a race a couple of times a year. Have a Big trophy that the winner holds until the next challenge.
These are just a few changes that could have happened this season but the management was apparently happy with the way things were going. Or just didn’t want anybody’s input. I hope the new management will listen to all the racers not just a few regulars.
I hope the new owners can turn Oxford into the track it should and can be.
Good Luck
