Three Times A Lady By Frankie Cicerale Cross country running, modeling, and drag racing. On the outside, these three activities seem to have nothing in common. To Sarah Winzer, however, they are all the same. To say that Winzer is a well-rounded person is an understatement. In addition to piloting both her Jr. Dragster and her father’s Super Street Mustang down the racetrack, she was a two time champion cross-country runner for her high school. She was also selected as a finalist in the Miss Teen New Jersey pageant. “I modeled and did pageants when I was younger”, the eighteen-year-old teenager said. “They had been sending me information on the pageant for years. I finally sent the information back, and a month later they called and told me I was accepted.” Drag racing is Winzer’s first love, though. “When you race, you travel more, it gives you more of a future, and you meet people who eventually become friends.”
“It was such a change going from 60 mph to 128 mph and pulling the wheels up as far as I do in the Mustang,” Winzer said. “I miss the Jr. Dragster, but this is fun. Nobody expected me to fill my father’s (1996 Division 1 Super Street Champion Glenn Winzer) shoes, and nobody was looking for me to go right out and win.” “I am extremely proud of her,” said her father. “She got into a car with a reputation of being difficult to handle, and she drove it and handled it really well.” That does not mean Sarah doesn’t want to win, however. One week after competing in the Division 1 Jr. Drag Racing League championship event held at Mason-Dixon Dragway, Winzer hopped in the Super Street car and went three rounds in the Division 1 event at Cecil County Dragway for her best outing of the year. “The Super Street guys are okay with me stepping up,” Winzer stated. They like to tease and joke with me about being younger than everyone else, but they treat me like I’ve been racing with them forever.”
“When I first started racing, they were all amazed and thought it was cool,” Sarah Said. Now, they really don’t care about the racing anymore. They’re all used to it. They’ll ask how I did and wish me luck, but that’s about it.” In 2002, Sarah drove the Mustang full time in the Super Street category, doing fairly well. “I was able to run more of a full schedule last year, but unfortunately I had to miss a few races, because of school.” Watch out: Sarah Winzer is here.
